should cable the proposal to London for the Directors there to put before the Foreign Office if they thought fit, and that we should at the same time state the proposal in writing to His Majesty's Minister. We did so by letter written in Peking of which we enclose a copy.
This was a matter upon which we should have much preferred to have your opinion in the first instance, but it was formulated during
a verbal discussion at the Legation. We felt at the time
that it would be helpful to have the views of the Directors
in London.
We bag to request that you will allow this Company and its Subsidiary Companies a reasonable time to complete their re-arrangements. If in your opinion it would be
desirable Sir Arthur Churchman could be appointed Chairman of the Board of this Company so that the principal Officer
would be a British Subject who is at present, although not
ordinarily, resident in China.
